I’ve been writing this story in my head for many months now. The story of our dog Lucy. I haven’t been able to put pen to paper, or finger to keyboard. I finally mustered up the focus, and courage to go down what I knew would be an emotional path and journey. You see our dog Lucy, died unexpectedly last August, two weeks after we returned from living overseas in New Zealand.
Lucy’s death was such a shock, the pain is still fresh in our hearts. I haven’t yet learned to live with the grief that I know will never fully go away. We’ve all experienced grief in some way, it’s that constant companion that is ever present. But eventually we learn to co-habitate with it, as it loosens its grip on our emotions, surfacing in our throats, hearts and stomachs a bit less each passing day.
Sometimes grief is more difficult to come to terms with given certain losses or circumstances. I'm not sure if it was the sudden, unexpected nature of her death, or the backdrop of the global pandemic, or the dramatic nature of our frantic return home to the U.S., or simply that Lucy was a profoundly special creature, a once in a lifetime dog. Perhaps it's all of these things combined into one.
Lucy's story is better told in pictures than words. A humble attempt to capture her spirit and honor the significance she had in our lives. RIP our dear, sweet perfect Lucy.
